Hawkwind (1970)

Wyrd Britain celebrates Hawkind's self titled debut album.

'Hawkwind Space Rock... a new album'

Released on the 14th August 1970 with adverts trumpeting the above statement, Hawkwind's debut album is perhaps their most egalitarian sounding release; the one that feels most in line with the spirit of the age ..

Bookended with two acoustic songs - 'Hurry on Sundown' & 'Mirror of Illusion' - that hark back to singer / guitarist Dave Brock's busking days, the former of which, a perennial Hawk fan favourite, opens the proceedings with a deceptively sunny demeanour before we are cast into an avant garde soundworld that only relents with the arrival of the lumpen album closer.

The sonic attack that makes up the majority of the album is a darkly discordant, mostly instrumental, jam sesssion that finds the band - Brock, Nik Turner (saxophone, vocals), Huw Lloyd Langton (lead guitar), John Harrison (bass), Terry Ollis (drums), Dik Mik (electronics) & Dick Taylor (guitar) - firing off each other in a manner honed over a year of gigging but still maybe slightly tentative; studio nerves perhaps?  What they are doing, though, is developing the sound, that, following a line-up reshuffle (Hawkwind's truly defining characteristic), would explode from the following year's 'In Search of Space',  the album that would perfectly encapsulate the truth of the statement at the top of this post.

It has it's champions but 'Hawkwind' has long been regarded, perhaps at best, as a curio within the bands catalogue, a tentative first step, but you know the cliché about adventures and first steps, and this one started a whole series of adventures that have lasted 55 years with no sign of stopping.

Master of Reality

Recorded in early 1971 and released on the 6th of August, Black Sabbath's third album, 'Master of Reality', saw the band release another genre defining record developing further on the two previous albums, 'Black Sabbath' & 'Paranoid'.  Having recorded and released two albums and toured around the world during 1970 the band were on top of their game and with more studio time to play with the band downtuned their instruments, smoked an unfeasible amount of hash and headed off into the void.

Eight tracks over a thirty four minute run time including four songs - 'Sweat Leaf', 'After Forever', 'Children of the Grave' & 'Into the Void' - that would come to be considered amongst their greatest, the band forged the heavy, groove laden sound and lyrical themes that would later come to define Grunge, Doom Metal and Stoner Rock.

Like it's predecessors the album was poorly reviewed by critics but embraced by the public charting high on both sides of the Atlantic and, to date, selling in excess of 4.8 million copies worldwide.

Writing this two weeks after the Ozzy's passing I know it'll always be their peerless debut that lives at the centre of my affections, but some 40 odd years on from when my Uncle Mike introduced me to them - thanks man - and at a point in my life when I listen to almost no rock music, that album and 'Master of Reality' number among a very few that are still rarely far from my record player.

NEWS: Pre-Order Telepathic Fish: Trawling The Early 90s Ambient Underground

NEWS: Pre-Order Telepathic Fish: Trawling The Early 90s Ambient Underground

Fundamental Frequencies are now taking pre-orders for 'Telepathic Fish: Trawling The Early 90s Ambient Underground' a retrospctive of favorite tunes played at the early 90s 'Telepathic Fish' chill-out afterparties.

From the press release:

Documenting the sights and sounds of South London’s seminal Telepathic Fish ambient parties. Hosted by Chantal Passamonte (aka Mira Calix - RIP), David Vallade, Mario Aguera and Kevin Foakes (aka DJ Food) - collectively named Openmind. With the help of Mixmaster Morris (The Irresistible Force) and Matt Black (Coldcut), they put on some of the earliest chill out events in London.

The selections featured here are all personal favourites that were played at the Telepathic Fish parties during the 90s. Picked and arranged by Mario, David and Kevin who combed their collections for key pieces they associate with the time and Chantal’s music tastes. Over a hundred tracks were selected, totalling nearly 11 hours of playing time, before being whittled down to the essentials by the trio, forming a snapshot of their world back in the day.

The album is released digitally on August 25th with the double vinyl following on September 5th.

Taster tunes and pre-orders can be found at the Bandcamp page here - 'Telepathic Fish: Trawling The Early 90s Ambient Underground'

Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath

Wyrd Britain celebrates the 55th anniversary of the release of 'Black Sabbath'.
55 years ago today, on the 13th February 1970, a former car horn tuner, a sheet metal worker with half his finger tips missing, a Butler and a drummer named Bill released an album that was to define an entire genre of music.

Naming themselves after a Boris Karloff movie and taking lyrical inspiration from Dennis Wheatley novels and musical inspiration from the Devil's interval the band produced a debut album that still sounds every bit as good today as it did back then even though initial reviews were scathing...

From Wikipedia...

"Rolling Stone's Lester Bangs described the band as, "just like Cream! But worse", and he dismissed the album as "a shuck – despite the murky songtitles and some inane lyrics that sound like Vanilla Fudge paying doggerel tribute to Aleister Crowley, the album has nothing to do with spiritualism, the occult, or anything much except stiff recitations of Cream clichés".

Robert Christgau, writing for The Village Voice, panned the album as "bullshit necromancy" He later described it as a reflection of "the worst of the counterculture", including "drug-impaired reaction time" and "long solos"."

The reviews certainly didn't hurt any as the album went on to sell almost 5 million copies worldwide and it's influence can still be felt today.

John Baker

Wyrd Britain celebrates the work of BBC Radiophonic Workshop composer John Baker with Trunk Records' 'The John Baker Tapes'.
John Baker, who died 28 years ago today at the far too young an age of 59, was a musician and composer most readily known for his 11 year stint (1963 - 1974) at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.  His work, with it's combination of traditional instrumentation with more unusual musique concrète techniques and sound sources -twanged rulers, pouring liquid, etc - is amongst the most easily identifiable of all the Workshop composers as, with Baker's jazz sensibilities never far from the surface, his compositions are often significantly lighter, catchier and more playful than those of his colleagues.

After leaving the Workshop in 1974 Baker never composed again and lived quietly until his death from liver cancer in 1998 which makes the body of work made in those 11 short years all the more remarkable.

The album below - along with Volume 2 which featured his soundtrack, library and advertising work - was released by Trunk Records in July and August of 2008 having been compiled by Alan Gubby of the great Revbjelde, head honcho of Buried Treasure where he released another album of Baker's music, 'The Vendetta Tapes' which I heartily recommend tracking down.

For those that would like to learn more about this fascinating composer the release page for the two Trunk albums features a lovely little biography written by Baker's brother, Richard that shines an illuminating light on the man behind and beyond the music.

Moon8: An 8-Bit Tribute To Dark Side Of The Moon

Wyrd Britain reviews 'Moon8: An 8-Bit Tribute To Dark Side Of The Moon'
Made by Brad Smith between 2006 and 2010 this is an interpretation of Pink Floyd's  'Dark Side Of The Moon' made for the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System.

For the Floyd purists I suspect this might be a difficult listen but for those of you with an affection for electronic music, game music or just the slightly barmy then this'll make your day because it's all those things.

You can find out more along with all sorts of technical details that my luddite brain wouldn't understand at rainwarrior.ca

This Quiet World

Originally released 22 years ago  in January 2003 this was the first album I made under the Psychic Space Invasion name - a name I used for years before reverting to my given name and then more recently to The British Space Group.  My old punk band had just broken up and I wanted to carry on working with the more experimental side of what we had done so armed with a PC, some bootleg software and samples and a love of generally unsettling sounds I started tinkering.

Copies of 'This Quiet World' (the name was a homage to the brilliant New Zealand movie 'The Quiet Earth') were originally only given out to a few friends who were curious about what I was doing at the time. They seemed to like it and word spread and more and more people asked for copies.  I've no idea how many I made - it wasn't a huge amount - but those copies went all around the world and occasionally folks still message me about how much they liked this one.

In the spirit of it's genesis it's free to download; always has been and always will be.

It started me along a path I'm still walking to this day on which I've made a lot of cool and talented friends and without it I perhaps would never have got to the point of starting Wyrd Britain and so it makes me happy and I hope you enjoy it.

Goth at the BBC

Screened in 2018 as part of a night celebrating 'Gothic' in art, literature and, of course, music this is a compilation of archive BBC performances from many of the stalwarts of the goth scene - Siouxsie and The Banshees, Bauhaus, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Killing Joke, The Sisters of Mercy, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - as well as a couple of later entrants - PJ Harvey, Marilyn Manson.

For those of us who still have far too many black clothes in our cupboards its a fun trip back in time that'll have you reaching for the mascara and downing a pint of snakebite and black.

Shoreline Ritual

Wyrd Britain reviews 'Shoreline Ritual' by Grey Malkin and Fogroom.
It's been a while since we heard from our friend Grey Malkin (formerly known as 'The Hare And The Moon') here on Wyrd Britain but this new EP made in collaboration with 'Fogroom' provides the perfect opportunity to reacquaint your ears with his music.

Shoreline Ritual comes with the enigmatic note that it...

might be a narrative.
A cautious exchange.
A bridge between here and there.
It could be about strange occurrences along the coast,
or old dreams, loss and the sea.

It feels fragile, nebulous, adrift and elegant.
It's a spell cast into the wind, a message carried by the waves and it's mesmerising.

The Machinery of the Moment

The British Space Group - The Machinery of the Moment
Wyrd Britain is a blog about stories, about the fictions we create around this odd little country some of us call home; stories about thin places and lost places, stone circles and ancient woodlands, about rabbit holes and hills of dreams, time travellers and triffids.

The Wyrd Britain label expands on this theme by releasing music that also tells stories,  music with a narrative and a sense of the mysterious that would be at home within the occult territories of a stranger Britain.

Following on from 2020's 'The Ley of the Land' 'The Machinery of the Moment' tells a story of an extended moment. Of the point where perception of time - or perhaps even time itself - collapses and we exist in a state of timelessness; a minute in an hour, an hour in a minute, a lifetime lived in the second between the tick and the tock.

'The Machinery of the Moment' is the fifth release from Ian Holloway's current project 'The British Space Group'.  It is a deliberate attempt to merge the music he has created under various guises over the last two decades and released on labels like Quiet World, Fungal and Siren Wire with his love of the strange and supernatural fiction featured on the Wyrd Britain blog.

'The Machinery of the Moment' is available for download or as a limited edition CDr by clicking on the player below.

Hellraiser: Soundtrack Hell - The Story of the Abandoned Coil Score

Stephen Thrower discusses Coil, Clive Barker and The Unreleased Themes For Hellraiser
In 1984 Coil member Stephen Thrower struck up a friendship with author Clive Barker after a chance meeting in a London Forbidden Planet shop and played him some tracks off the not yet released first Coil album, 'Scatology'.

From this friendship and mutual artistic appreciation the band were soon asked by Barker to provide the soundtrack to his movie 'Hellraiser', an adaptation of his own novella 'The Hellbound Heart'.  Alas, beyond some preliminary recordings, it was not to be and at the studio's insistence the movie eventually went the more typical orchestral route via composer Christopher Young.

Stephen Thrower discusses Coil, Clive Barker and The Unreleased Themes For Hellraiser
In the video below Stephen Thrower tells the story of the soundtrack; its development and it's demise.  Obviously for a Coil (and Cyclobe) fan like me it makes for a fascinating watch and it's a joy to see Thrower's enjoyment in the telling.  Personally Hellraiser was never a film I had any particular love for; I thought it had some striking visuals but body horror was never really my thing. I can't help but feel though that an undiluted version formed from those initial discussions between the author and the musicians would have been quite something to behold.

And then there's the music.  Within Coil fandom the story has long been debated and endless "What if's" and "If only's" discussed over how different the film could or should have been.

The small amount of music they made in that week in the studio has long been available and with it's very of the time sound palette and strong John Carpenter vibes it ably shows just how good it all could have sounded and makes the decison to drop them from the project all the more bizarre and obviously one made by corporate dictat.
